Faith In Jesus!

1 And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God (holy, consecrated, set apart) and are partners (share) with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare (confess) to be God’s Messenger (Apostle) and High Priest. 2 For He (Jesus) was faithful to God, who appointed Him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house. 3 But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. 4 For every house has a builder, but the One who built everything is God. 5 Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant (minister). His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later (about Christ). 6 But Christ (Messiah), as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ…. 12 Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God…. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Hebrews 3:1-6, 12, 14 (NLT)

The living LORD God is the Father of our Savior Jesus Christ (e.g., see Matthew 14:33; Matthew 16:17; Luke 1:31-32, 35; Luke 22:70; John 20:31; 1 Corinthians 8:6). Jesus’ title as God’s Son was confirmed by the living God empowering His Son with the Holy Spirit and empowering Jesus with powerful miracles, wonders, signs, and good deeds (e.g., see Luke 24:19; John 3:2; Acts 2:22; Acts 10:38). Then, our Savior Jesus was handed over to wicked religious and Roman leaders by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and Jesus was unjustly sentenced and crucified to death on Calvary’s cross (e.g., see Isaiah 53:10; Matthew 16:21; Luke 24:20; Acts 2:23; Acts 3:13, 18). Importantly, the living God’s confirmed Jesus as His Son by raising Jesus from complete death and exalting Him to the place of highest honor in heaven, at His right hand (e.g., see Acts 2:24, 32-33; Acts 3:15; Acts 4:10; Romans 1:3-4). Therefore, the living God has made His Son Jesus to be both Lord and Messiah (e.g., see Matthew 28:18; Acts 2:36; Romans 14:9).

Significantly, the LORD God declares everyone holy, righteous, and forgiven through belief and faith in His Son Jesus’ sacrificial death and precious blood for our sins (Hebrews 3:1; see also Isaiah 53:10-12; Romans 3:24-25; Romans 5:1-2; Colossians 1:13-14; Hebrews 2:11; Hebrews 10:10, 14, 29; Hebrews 13:12). Everyone who wholeheartedly listens, accepts, and obeys Jesus’ message is adopted into God’s family, receive God’s blessed Spirit, and will never taste eternal death (e.g., see Proverbs 8:32; Luke 8:19-21; Luke 11:28; John 5:24; John 8:51; John 14:21; Galatians 3:26; James 1:22).

Therefore, the unknown author of Hebrews repeatedly encourages ALL people to continually, faithfully, and wholeheartedly love, trust, and obey the LORD God and His Son Jesus Christ, and produce good deeds and not evil (Hebrews 3:1, 6, 12-14; e.g., Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 6:9-12; Hebrews 10:23; Hebrews 12:1-2). Amazingly, the message of trusting and obeying the living God and doing good and not evil is a repeated message not only in the book of Hebrews but also throughout the Holy Scriptures (e.g., Psalm 37:3, 5; Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 26:4; Matthew 7:15-20; Matthew 13:23; Galatians 5:22-23; Colossians 1:10). Our wholehearted trust and obedience in the living God and His Son Jesus brings God’s blessings, necessities, and salvation (e.g., see Psalm 115:9-11; Proverbs 16:3; Matthew 6:33; Luke 8:15; John 15:5; Hebrews 10:35-39).

The loving and faithful LORD God sent His Son Jesus the Messiah (Christ) as His Messenger and great High Priest to declare His message, love, and salvation to ALL people (Hebrews 3:1, 6; e.g., see also Luke 4:18; John 3:15-17; John 20:21; 1 Corinthians 1:9; 1 Timothy 1:15; Hebrews 2:17; Hebrews 4:14-15; 1 Peter 5:7). As High Priest, Jesus Christ intercedes for faithful believers with His Father the living God (e.g., see Luke 22:31-32; Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1). Some biblical translations call Jesus the LORD God’s Apostle, meaning “the One sent from God” (e.g., see John 3:17, 34; John 17:2-3).

During His public ministry, Jesus repeatedly spoke of Himself as having been sent into the world by His Father, the living LORD God (e.g., see Matthew 10:40; Mark 9:37; John 4:34; John 5:24, 30, 36-38; John 6:38). Thus, Jesus is the supreme Apostle, the One from whom all other apostleship flows (see also John 6:29, 57; John 7:29; John 8:42; John 10:36; John 11:42; John 13:3).  As an Apostle, Jesus was continually faithful and obedient to the living LORD God (Hebrews 3:1; see also e.g., John 4:34; John 14:31). Therefore, the living LORD God appointed His Son Jesus as our great High Priest over His house – God’s people, just as Moses faithfully served God’s house (Hebrews 3:1-2, 5; see also Hebrews 2:17-18; Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 10:21; 1 Peter 2:4-5).

Both Moses and the Lord Jesus were sent by the LORD God to lead His people – one from Egyptian bondage (see Exodus 3:7-10) and One from bondage from the evil one (see Hebrews 2:14-15). Like Jesus, Moses was God’s faithful servant and steward (Hebrews 3:2, 5; Hebrews 10:7, 9; see also Exodus 40:16; Numbers 12:7; Deuteronomy 34:10-12). Moses courageously led the ancient Israelites from Egyptian slavery with God’s help by great signs, wonders, and mighty acts (e.g., see Exodus 14:31; Deuteronomy 4:34; Deuteronomy 34:11-12). Also, Moses was a great prophet of God that proclaimed to Israel God’s message (e.g., see Deuteronomy 34:10, 12; Joshua 14:6). Moreover, Moses gave the people God’s book of the covenant which included the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai (e.g., see Exodus 19:1-23:19). Many biblical scholars believe Moses authored the first five books of the Old Testament. Because of his obedience and faithfulness, the LORD God spoke to Moses face to face (e.g., see Exodus 33:11; Numbers 7:89; Numbers 12:8; Deuteronomy 34:11). However, Moses was only a servant or minister of God (Hebrews 3:2-3, 5; see also Joshua 1:1-2).

The author of Hebrews repeatedly reminds everyone that the Lord Jesus Christ has far greater glory, superiority, and honor than Moses (see Hebrews 3:3). First, the Lord Jesus Christ is God, and He is the living LORD God’s faithful and only begotten Son (Hebrews 3:3, 6; see also e.g., Matthew 16:16; Mark 1:1; John 1:1-5, 14, 18; John 20:30-31; Colossians 1:15, 19; Hebrews 1:2-3, 5, 8, 10). Furthermore, Jesus Christ is our great King, Savior, Deliverer, and Redeemer (e.g., see Matthew 1:21; Matthew 2:2; Matthew 21:5; Matthew 27:37; Luke 2:10-11; John 1:49). Even more, Jesus was faithful to God and to His Father’s will (e.g., see Philippians 2:5-11; Hebrews 5:7-10; Hebrews 12:1-3).

The Lord Jesus Christ is the Builder and Heir of God’s house whereas Moses was simply part of God’s house. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe; for by Him, the living LORD God “made the worlds” (Hebrews 3:3-4; see also Genesis 1:1-3; John 1:3; Hebrews 1:2-3, 10). The living LORD God along with His Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit made everything in heaven and on earth (Hebrews 3:3-4; see also Genesis 1:1-3; Genesis 14:19; Nehemiah 9:6; Isaiah 40:28; Acts 17:24; Hebrews 1:2; Hebrews 11:3; Revelation 4:11).

As such, the living God has appointed His Son Jesus with complete charge and authority over heaven and earth, His Kingdom, and His household – God’s faithful people (Hebrews 3:2, 6; see also e.g., Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 11:27; Matthew 28:18; Luke 22:29-30; John 3:35; Hebrews 1:2). Jesus Christ is the Head of the church, which is God’s household (Hebrews 3:6; see also e.g., 1 Corinthians 3:16; Colossians 1:18, 24), and Lord of all (e.g., Acts 2:36; Romans 1:3-4; Romans 10:9; Ephesians 1:22-23; Philippians 2:9-10; Hebrews 1:2). All faithful and obedient believers of Jesus Christ – whether black, white, young, old, Jew or Gentile – are God’s household and God’s children (e.g., see Luke 8:19-21; John 1:12-13).

Because Jesus’ Lordship and Sonship, the Holy Spirit warns and counsels everyone to faithfully listen to and obey Him from our whole hearts and not turn away our hope, confidence, and love in Him (Hebrews 3:6-8, 15; see also John 12:37). The author of Hebrews quoted from Psalm 95 with the story of the exodus generation’s rebellion to remind believers today to remain wholeheartedly faithful and obedient to the living God and His Son Jesus (e.g., see Psalm 95:7-11; 1 Corinthians 10:6, 11).

Sadly, the ancient Israelites leaving Egyptian bondage were unfaithful, rebellious, and disobedient towards Jesus’ Father, the living LORD God, and God’s righteous commands (Hebrews 3:8, 16-19; see also Numbers 14:1-4; Deuteronomy 1:26-40). These ancients Israelites personally witnessed God’s Presence, glory, and power after God’s great deliverance from Egyptian slavery and in the wilderness (e.g., Numbers 14:13, 22; Deuteronomy 4:33-34; Deuteronomy 26:8). Yet, these ancient Israelites responded to God’s grace and glory with repeated complaints, disobedience to God’s authority, and ignored God’s love and provision (Hebrews 3:8-9; see also Exodus 17:5-7; Numbers 11:1-4; Numbers 14:11, 22-23; Deuteronomy 1:32; Deuteronomy 9:23; Psalm 78:22, 32).

The author of Hebrews was not exaggerating when he wrote that the Israelites had repeatedly failed to trust and obey the living God (see Hebrews 3:8-9). For instance, these ancient Israelites complained against the living God at the Red Sea after His deliverance from Egyptian slavery (see Exodus 14:11-12). Also, the ancient Israelites grumbled against the living God for lack of water at Marah and Rephidim (see Exodus 15:23-24, Exodus 17:1-3). Moreover, the ancient Israelites tested God by grumbling against God’s heavenly bread (manna) and quail (see Exodus 16:2-3, 11-15; Numbers 11:4-9). Even worse, the ancient Israelites looked to other gods (idolatry) instead of wholeheartedly loving and worshipping the living God only (Hebrews 3:10; see also Exodus 32:1-10). Then finally on the border of God’s Promised Land at Kadesh Barnea, the ancient Israelites became overcome with fear and did not trust in God’s power and glory (see Numbers 13:27-29, 32-33; Numbers 14:1-4, 10-11; Deuteronomy 1:19-21).

Because of Israel’s disobedience and unfaithfulness, the living God became very anger against those ancient Israelites who tested God’s patience and they never received God’s spiritual rest and died in the wilderness (Hebrews 3:10-11; see also Deuteronomy 1:34-35; Hebrews 4:3, 5). Sadly, these ancient Israelites delivered from Egyptian slavery did not trust and obey God for His blessings and deliverance (e.g., see Psalm 78:22; Psalm 106:24). In other words, these ancient Israelites did not truly trust and believe the Almighty God could protect and provide! Instead of finding God’s spiritual rest, inheritance, and blessings, these disobedient and rebellious people found God’s wrath and wandered in the wilderness for 40 years (Hebrews 3:9-11, 17-18; see also Numbers 14:20-23, 29-30, 33; Deuteronomy 1:34-35; Psalm 106:26; Acts 7:36; 1 Corinthians 10:5; Jude 1:5). These ancient Israelites went backward in unbelief and fear instead of forward by faith and trust in the living God.

Yet two individuals – Caleb and Joshua – illustrated the heart-holiness and faithfulness that God requires (Hebrews 3:6; see also Numbers 13:30; Numbers 14:6-10, 24; Deuteronomy 1:34-38). Caleb and Joshua honored and believed the living Almighty God for His provision and deliverance (e.g., Numbers 14:6-9). Because of Caleb and Joshua’s faithfulness and belief in the living God, they both entered God’s Promised Land (e.g., see Numbers 14:29-30, 38). However, all the other ancient Israelites living Egyptian bondage over the age of twenty died in the wilderness and never entered God’s Promised Land (see Numbers 14:26-38; Deuteronomy 1:34-35). As a life lesson, the author of Hebrews warns everyone that our rebellion (see Hebrews 3:16), sin (see Hebrews 3:17), disobedience (see Hebrews 3:18), and unbelief (see Hebrews 3:19) to the living God and His Son Jesus remove God’s heart peace and spiritual rest and bring God’s wrath and discontentment (Hebrews 3:18-19; see also John 3:36; Hebrews 4:6). Consequently, the living LORD God in His righteous anger closed the doors to His Promised Land to those who rebelled, sins, and disobeyed Him (see Numbers 14:21-35; Numbers 32:7-11; Psalm 106:24-26).

Therefore, the author of Hebrews warns everyone to patiently stay focus on the Lord Jesus Christ, turn away from evil and unbelief, and live a life of obedience and goodness to God through His Son Jesus Christ (Hebrews 3:1, 12-13; see also Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 10:23-24; Hebrews 10:35-39; Hebrews 12:1-2). Our obedience, endurance, and faithfulness to God through His Son Jesus Christ brings our eternal salvation and blessings (e.g., see Matthew 13:23). Those who are faithful and obedient to the living God and His moral commands will find the path to God’s glory (e.g., see Luke 8:15). If we are wholeheartedly faithful and obedient to the living God and His Son Jesus to the end, then we will share in God’s glory, spiritual rest, and eternal life (Hebrews 3:6, 14; see also Luke 8:8, 15; Hebrews 6:11-12; 10:23, 35-39).

Amazingly, as we faithfully trust, hope, and cling to the living God, then the living God supernaturally by His Holy Spirit gives us the strength, empowerment, and enablement we need to sore and endure, despite any testing or hardship (e.g., see Psalm 27:1; Isaiah 40:29-31; Isaiah 41:10; John 16:33; Romans 5:3-5; Romans 8:31; 1 Corinthians 1:8; Hebrews 10:36; James 5:7). In other words, as we cling and trust in God (perseverance and persistence), the living God clings, saves, and blesses us (preservation and protection) (e.g., see John 10:27-29). Failure to persevere and persistent reveals that a person is not a child of God because perseverance and persistence are hallmarks of God’s faithful people (e.g., see Matthew 10:22; Matthew 24:13; Mark 13:13; Luke 8:4-15; Colossians 1:22-23; Hebrews 10:35-36). Focusing on the Lord Jesus Christ is the primary means of persevering in the faith (e.g., see Hebrews 2:9; Hebrews 12:1-2). However, the author of Hebrews warns and cautions everyone that if you ignore and rebel against God’s ways of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ, they will be subject to God’s wrath, unrest, and eternal punishment (Hebrews 3:15-16, 19; e.g., see also Matthew 13:20-22; 1 Thessalonians 1:10).

The living God graciously gives ALL people through our faith and obedience to His Son the Lord Jesus spiritual rest and peace (Hebrews 3:12-13; see also Matthew 11:28-30; Hebrews 10:23). The living God is immeasurably patient and loving (e.g., see Exodus 34:6; Psalm 86:15), and He welcomes EVERYONE who truly repents and confesses any sins (e.g., see Joel 2:13; Luke 24:47; Romans 2:4; 1 John 1:9). Whether rich, poor, young, old, prostitute or priest, the living LORD God wants everyone to trust and obey wholeheartedly and humbly in Him (Hebrews 3:10, 12, see also e.g., Matthew 6:33; Luke 12:15, 22-23, 27-32; Luke 18:9-14).

Why Is Easter So Important?

9 What we do see is Jesus, who was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because He suffered death for us, He is now “crowned with glory and honor.” Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone. 10 God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that He should make Jesus, through His suffering, a perfect Leader, fit to bring them into their salvation. 11 So now Jesus and the ones He makes holy (sanctified) have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters. 12 For He said to God, “I will proclaim Your Name to My brothers and sisters. I will praise You among Your assembled people.” … 17 Therefore, it was necessary for Him (Jesus) to be made in every respect like us, His brothers and sisters, so that He could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then He could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. 18 Since He Himself has gone through suffering and testing, He is able to help us when we are being tested. Hebrews 2:9-12, 17-18 (NLT)

The unknown author of Hebrews warns and instructs everyone to listen very carefully to the truths we have heard from the living God about His Son Jesus, or we may drift away into eternal punishment (Hebrews 2:1; see also 1 John 2:5). The living God sent His holy angels, as messengers from God, to give His moral commands to Moses at Mount Sinai – the Mosaic Law (Hebrews 2:2; see also Deuteronomy 33:2; Psalm 68:17; Acts 7:38; Galatians 3:19). Sadly, people continually disobeyed and rebelled against the living God’s moral commands which led to God’s justice, punishment, and wrath (Hebrews 2:2; see also John 7:19; Acts 7:53).

Now, the living LORD God has given everyone a GREATER truth about His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and that greater truth is the Gospel (Good News) message. This is the GREATER truth: the living LORD God freely gives ALL PEOPLE salvation and reconciliation to Him through faith and obedience to His Son Jesus Christ’s teaching, sacrificial death, and miraculous resurrection (Hebrews 2:3; e.g., see also John 1:29; Luke 19:10; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; 1 Timothy 1:15; Hebrews 10:26-29). The living LORD God and His Son Jesus have confirmed the great Gospel message of salvation through signs, wonders, and various miracles as well as through the Holy Spirit’s power (Hebrews 2:4; see also John 3:2; Acts 2:22; Acts 10:38; Romans 1:16-17). The disciples who were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ ministry and obeyed His teaching passed the Gospel message to others (Hebrews 2:3-4; see also Acts 1:21-22; 2 Peter 1:16; 1 John 1:1). The disciples’ Gospel message about Jesus was authenticated and confirmed by God’s power in their lives through amazing signs, wonders, miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 2:3-4; e.g., see also, Acts 2:43; Acts 3:6-7, 11-12, 16; Acts 5:12-16; Acts 9:31-42; Acts 14:3, 8-10; Acts 19:11-12; Acts 28:7-10).

The living LORD God loves ALL people, even above His holy angels (Hebrews 2:5-6; see also Deuteronomy 33:3; Psalm 8:4-6; Luke 12:6-7; John 3:16). From the beginning of human history, the LORD God’s purpose was that the humans He created in His image would have dominion and control in His world, subject only to His Kingship (Hebrews 2:7-8; see also Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 8:6-8). Sadly, the first humans Adam and Eve failed to receive God’s dominion and control because of their sin, rebellion, and disobedience against the living God and caused all humanity to fall into sin – the Great Fall (e.g., see Genesis 3:1-7). In the coming future world - Utopia, God’s righteous and redeemed people will control His world, and His Son Jesus will be their Captain and Leader (Hebrews 2:5, 10; see also Isaiah 65:17; Isaiah 66:22; 2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1-4).

The LORD God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world on a rescue mission to take away ALL humanities’ sins (e.g., see Luke 1:78; Luke 2:10-11; John 3:16-17; Romans 8:38-39; 1 John 4:9-10; 1 John 2:2; Romans 3:25). Approximately 2,000 years ago, God visited earth when the living LORD God made His Son Jesus Christ temporarily lower than the angels and made Jesus human — the God-Man (Hebrews 2:7, 9, 14, 16-17; see also John 1:1-2, 14; Luke 1:29-33, 35; Romans 1:3; Galatians 4:4; Philippians 2:7-8; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 John 4:2). The Father of Jesus graciously sent His Son Jesus as a Jew – the “Seed of Abraham” – with human flesh and blood to become a living and final sacrifice to take away the sins of the world (Hebrews 2:14, 16-17; see also John 1:29; John 4:22; Romans 3:25; Romans 8:32; 2 Corinthians 5:19; Philippians 2:6-8; 1 John 4:10, 14). The Lord Jesus Christ’s coming to earth and living as a human is known as the Incarnation (e.g., see Matthew 1:21, 23). With the Incarnation, the living LORD God was in His Son Jesus reconciling and merging the world to Himself (e.g., see 2 Corinthians 5:19). In the order of creation, humans are made lower than angels, and the Lord Jesus Christ took this lower place temporarily during the Incarnation (see Hebrews 2:9).

In His humanity, the Lord Jesus experienced all the same emotions, pains, hardships, and temptations of humans (e.g., see John 4:6-8). During His earthly ministry, Jesus experienced fatigue and weariness (e.g., see Matthew 8:24; John 4:6); hunger and thirst (e.g., see Matthew 4:2; Matthew 21:18; John 19:28); joy and sorrow (e.g., see Matthew 26:37; John 15:11); compassion and love (e.g., see Matthew 9:36; John 11:5); and righteous anger (e.g., see Mark 3:5). Yet, the Lord Jesus Christ NEVER sinned against the living God nor disobeyed His Father’s righteous commands (Hebrews 2:18; see also 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15; Hebrews 7:26; 1 Peter 2:22).

Biblical scholars refer to the Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death for all humanities’ sin as an “atonement,” “propitiation,” or “expiation” (Hebrews 2:17; see also Romans 3:25; 2 Corinthians 5:5; 1 John 2:2). The Lord Jesus suffered and tasted the horrible death of crucifixion on Calvary’s Cross as the God-Man to bring salvation, redemption, and freedom to ALL people through faith in Him (Hebrews 2:9-10, 15, 17-18; see also e.g., John 1:29, 34; John 3:16; Galatians 1:4; 1 Peter 2:24). Only as a human could the Lord Jesus Christ suffer eternal death for ALL people to remove and destroy the power of sin in our lives (Hebrews 2:14; see also Romans 8:3; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15). Jesus’ sacrificial death and subsequent resurrection from complete death arrested, ended, and destroyed the power of the evil one, who had the power of death (Hebrews 2:14; see also John 16:11; Romans 6:5-11; 2 Timothy 1:10; 1 John 3:8). In other words, the evil one is disarmed, inoperative, and has no control against faithful and obedient followers of Jesus (e.g., see Colossians 2:15). Everyone dies, but death is not the end for believers of Jesus but a doorway to victory and a new life through faith in Jesus (e.g., see John 14:6; 1 Corinthians 15:55-58).

Through His sacrificial death and miraculous resurrection from complete death, the living LORD God has crowned His Son Jesus with glory and honor and given His Son Jesus complete charge over everything (Hebrews 2:8-9; see also Acts 2:23-24, 32-33, 36; Romans 1:4; Romans 8:34; Philippians 2:9-10). Even more, the living Jesus brings everyone who believes and obeys Him freedom, restoration, eternal salvation, and God’s Holy Spirit power (Hebrews 2:10, 14-15; see also John 8:36; Hebrews 5:9). The living God gives His spiritual empowerment to those who obey Him (e.g., see John 14:15-17, 21, 23-24; Acts 5:32). Sadly, Adam and Eve failed to receive God’s glory because of their sin, rebellion, and disobedience against God (e.g., see Genesis 3:1-7). Jesus shares and brings many sons and daughters into God’s glory who trust and obey Him (Hebrews 2:10; see also John 17:22-24; Revelation 1:5-6).

Furthermore through our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection by His Father, the living LORD God declares all believers holy (sanctified, cleansed), righteous (justified), and adopted into God’s family and Kingdom (Hebrews 2:11; see also John 1:12-13; Romans 5:1; Romans 8:14-23; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:26; Galatians 4:5; Hebrews 10:10, 14, 29). The Lord Jesus Christ’s sacrificial suffering and death made Him a perfect Leader to bring ALL BELIEVERS in Him into their eternal salvation and glory (see Hebrews 2:10). Only through Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection could He deliver and bring freedom and salvation from sin and death (see Hebrews 2:15). Now, faithful and obedient believers of Jesus now have the SAME Father of Jesus Christ also as their Father (Hebrews 2:11-12; see also Romans 8:15). Even more, believers become united with the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ and become His fellow brothers and sisters (Hebrews 2:11-13; see also Galatians 2:20). During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ declared that everyone who TRUSTS in Him and OBEYS His teaching as His brothers and sisters and part of God’s Kingdom (e.g., see Luke 8:19-21; Luke 11:28; John 14:15, 21, 23; James 1:22).

Even more, the Lord Jesus Christ’s humanity made Him our merciful and faithful final High Priest before His Father, the living LORD God (Hebrews 2:17; see also Hebrews 4:14-16). In the Old Testament, the high priest was the mediator or intercessor between God and His people. The high priest’s job was to regularly offer animal sacrifices according to the Mosaic Law and to intercede with God for forgiveness of the people's sins. Jesus Christ is now our High Priest. Now, the Lord Jesus Christ understands our weaknesses, trials, and temptations, and He freely gives His mercy, grace, and Spirit during our temptation (e.g., see Hebrews 4:15-16). Because of the Lord Jesus Christ’s suffering and temptation, He knows what it is like when humans suffer and are tempted (see Hebrews 2:18). Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ is wonderfully able to help and save us humans during our suffering, testing, and temptations (see Hebrews 2:18). Now, the Lord Jesus Christ is obedient believers’ perfect High Priest who intercedes and mediates with His Father. Having personally experienced human testing, hardships, and temptations, the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ can now better help ALL humans with our testing, hardship, and temptation (e.g., see Hebrews 2:18). If you need any help, cry out to Jesus for help (e.g., Romans 8:34; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25; 1 John 2:1)!

Because of Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection, ALL humans must STOP sinning and doing evil, REPENT of their sins, and TURN and LOVE the living LORD God, who is the Father of Jesus (e.g., see Matthew 4:17; Matthew 22:27; Mark 1:14; Luke 13:3, 5, 27, 1 John 2:1). The Son of God bore ALL our sins in His body on Calvary’s Cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness (e.g., see 1 Peter 2:24). Our trust, goodness, and obedience in the living God and His Son Jesus removes ALL our sins (e.g., see Acts 2:38-40; Acts 3:19). The living God calls ALL people to OBEY His righteous ways and commands (e.g., see 1 John 2:3-6). Every time one sinner repents and turns to the living and loving God, God’s holy angels rejoice and celebrates your recovery from the death of the evil one to new life (e.g., see Luke 15:7, 10, 32). Our continual sins, disobedience, and evil actions reveal you do not love God but in allegiance and obedience with the evil one (e.g., see 1 John 3:7-8). COME BACK TO GOD (e.g., see 2 Corinthians 5:20).

Heaven and Angels

This shows that the Son (Jesus Christ) is far greater than the angels, …. angels are only servants — spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. Hebrews 1:4, 14 (NLT)

The true and living LORD God is the eternal King and Judge of heaven and earth, and He is Almighty and without equal (e.g., see Genesis 18:25; 1 Samuel 2:10; Psalm 10:16; Psalm 47:7, 11; Psalm 50:6; Psalm 58:11; 1 Timothy 1:17; 1 Timothy 6:15; Revelation 4:9-10; Revelation 15:3). The living LORD God is not simply the greatest of many gods — He is the only true God and everlasting King and LORD of lords (e.g., see Deuteronomy 6:4-6; Deuteronomy 10:17; Isaiah 6:5; Jeremiah 10:6, 10). As the King and Judge, the true and living LORD God sits on His royal throne overseeing and ruling the whole world (e.g., see 1 Kings 22:19; 2 Chronicles 18:18; Psalm 47:8; Isaiah 6:1; Ezekiel 1:26-28; Daniel 7:9; Revelation 4:2; Revelation 20:11). The living and eternal LORD God is holy as His All-powerful Spirit radiates from His throne (e.g., see Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 1:4; Revelation 4:5, 8).

Surrounding the Almighty LORD God’s throne are all the armies of heaven (hosts) on His right and His left (e.g., see Deuteronomy 33:2; 1 Kings 22:19; Job 2:1; Psalm 89:5-8; Hebrews 12:22). The Holy Scriptures also call the armies of heaven surrounding the LORD God the “heavenly council,” “heavenly court,” “hosts of heaven,” or the “Sabaoth” (e.g., see Job 1:6; Job 38:7; Jeremiah 23:18, 22; Luke 2:13; Romans 9:29; James 5:4). The Holy Scriptures speak of a “heavenly court” or “heavenly council” (e.g., see Genesis 1:26; Genesis 3:22; Genesis 11:7; Job 15:8; Psalm 82:1; Isaiah 6:8). Revelation chapters 4 and 5 give a beautiful picture of the throne room of God with His heavenly council (see Revelation 4:1-5:14). Because of the LORD God’s mighty armies, the Holy Scriptures will sometimes translate the living God the “LORD of Hosts,” “the God of the armies of Israel,” “LORD of Heaven’s Armies,” or “LORD Almighty” (e.g., see 2 Samuel 5:10; 1 Samuel 17:36, 45; 1 Kings 18:15; Isaiah 6:3; Zechariah 4:6, 9).

The armies of heavens consist of God’s holy angels, elders, heavenly bodies such as the stars, sun, elements, and moon, and living creatures that surround His royal throne (e.g., see Joshua 10:8, 11-14; Psalm 34:7; Psalm 68:17; Revelation 4:4, 6; Revelation 5:6, 11). The living God controls these armies of heavens (e.g., see Psalm 65:7; Psalm 107:23-25; Matthew 8:26-27; Mark 4:37-41; Luke 8:24-25). For example, Psalm 104 speaks of the storm-wind, moon, clouds, and the lightning as agents of God’s purposes (see Psalm 104:3-4, 19-22). These heavenly bodies are created by the living God and are NOT to be worshipped, trusted, or consulted (e.g., see Genesis 1:16-17; Exodus 20:3-5; Deuteronomy 4:19; Deuteronomy 5:7-9; 2 Kings 17:16; 2 Kings 21:3; Revelation 19:10; Revelation 22:8-9). Only the living LORD God is to be worshipped, trusted, and consulted (e.g., see Deuteronomy 6:13; Matthew 4:10; Revelation 14:7). The armies of heaven are only servants of the living God that worship and serve the living LORD God, carry out His instructions and will for His earth, and protect His people (e.g., see 1 Samuel 17:45; Psalm 91:11-12; Psalm 103:20-21; Psalm 148:2; 2 Kings 6:16-17; Daniel 7:10; Matthew 18:10; Hebrews 1:7, 14; Revelation 4:8; Revelation 19:10).

The Lord Jesus Christ is Commander of God’s armies of heaven as the Firstborn Son of the living LORD God (e.g., see Joshua 5:13-15; Matthew 3:16-17; Matthew 16:16; John 20:30-31; Revelation 19:11-16, 19). Even more, the Lord Jesus Christ is One with His Father the LORD God (e.g., see Deuteronomy 6:4; John 10:30; John 14:9-10; John 17:11, 21-23). The New Testament rightly proclaims that Jesus is Lord and Christ (the Anointed One, Messiah) filled with the Spirit who currently sits in the throne room of heaven (e.g., see Acts 2:36; Revelation 5:6). The Lord Jesus Christ is seated “on the right hand of the Majesty on high,” the place of honor beside His Father, the LORD God (Hebrews 1:3, 13; see also Psalm 110:1-2; Matthew 22:43-44; Matthew 26:64; Mark 16:19; Luke 22:68-69; Acts 2:33-34; Acts 5:31; Romans 8:34; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 1:3, 13; Hebrews 8:1; Hebrews 10:12; Hebrews 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22). The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the LORD God indicates that He is actively ruling and reigning with His Father as Lord of All (see Hebrews 1:2, 13). The hosts of heaven worship the Lord Jesus Christ (e.g., see Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 5:8, 11-14). One day coming soon, EVERYONE will worship in heaven and on earth and under the earth the Jesus Christ as Lord, to the glory of God the Father (see Philippians 2:9-11). Moreover, one day the Jesus Christ as the Great I AM will come on the clouds of heaven at His second coming (advent) with the heavenly hosts (e.g., see Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 16:27; Matthew 24:30-31; Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62; Revelation 1:7). Most importantly, faith in God’s only begotten Son the Lord Jesus Christ is the only doorway and entrance into the throne room of heaven (e.g., see John 3:16-17; John 10:9; John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

A true prophet of the living LORD God has had the privilege of seeing the LORD God sitting on His throne with His heavenly council or court (e.g., see Exodus 24:9-10; 1 Kings 22:19-22; 2 Kings 2:11-12; Isaiah 6:1-7; Jeremiah 23:16-22; Ezekiel 1:26-28; Daniel 7:9-14; Amos 3:7). Long ago the LORD God again and again spoke through His faithful prophets in many and various ways, including visions, dreams, and even face to face (Hebrews 1:1; see also see Numbers 12:6, 8; 2 Kings 17:13; 2 Chronicles 36:15; Jeremiah 7:3, 13; Jeremiah 25:4; Jeremiah 26:5; Jeremiah 29:19; Jeremiah 35:15; Ezekiel 14:6; Ezekiel 18:30). The living LORD God gave the prophets His plans, warnings of repentance, divine will, and purposes for all people (Hebrews 1:1; see also 2 Kings 17:13; Jeremiah 35:15; Ezekiel 18:31; Amos 3:7).

Then finally, the living LORD God sent His only begotten Son the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior (incarnation) in the last days to reveal His glory, instruct the people, and bring eternal salvation (Hebrews 1:2-3, 5-6; see also Luke 2:10-11; John 3:16-17; John 17:3, 6, 8, 18, 21, 23, 25; Colossians 1:15). The book of Hebrews frequently quotes from the Old Testament starting from chapter 1 and continuing throughout the book. The unknown author of Hebrews is making the point that God’s plan has been unfolding since Genesis chapter 3 with His prophets and then finally His Son the Lord Jesus. One day all of human history will culminate with Jesus’ second visit to earth!

The Lord Jesus Christ has received the whole world as an inheritance from His Father, the living LORD God of Heaven’s Armies (Sabaoth) (Hebrews 1:2; see also Psalm 2:8; Matthew 11:27; Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19; John 1:3). In other words, the LORD God, who is the Father of Jesus Christ, has given and entrusted everything to His Son (e.g., see Matthew 11:27; Matthew 28:18; John 3:35; John 13:3). Jesus Christ has become the Firstborn and Royal Heir of God (Hebrews 1:6; see also John 1:18; John 3:16; Romans 8:29; Colossians 1:15, 18). The living God has given Jesus a Name far greater than the angels and a Name that is far above every name (Hebrews 1:4-5; see also Matthew 3:17; Ephesians 1:20-21; Philippians 2:9-10; Hebrews 5:5). Therefore, the Lord Jesus is far greater, superior, and higher in rank than the angels and the prophets (Hebrews 1:2, 4-5; see also Hebrews 2:9). The victorious Lord Jesus Christ is the Lion of the tribe of Judah and the right Heir to David’s throne, and He is Son of the living God (e.g., see Matthew 16:16; Matthew 17:5; Mark 1:11; Acts 13:32-35; Revelation 5:5).

The throne of the Lord Jesus Christ will last forever and eternally, and He rules His Kingdom with justice and fairness (Hebrews 1:8; see also Luke 1:33). The Lord Jesus Christ loves right and hates wrong (see Hebrews 1:9). Therefore, the living God has anointed and poured out His Spirit upon His Son Jesus Christ more than anyone else and without measure (Hebrews 1:9; see also Isaiah 61:1, 3; John 3:34; Acts 10:38; Philippians 2:9). Furthermore, the living LORD God called His Son Jesus “Lord” when He said, “Lord, in the beginning You made the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands …. They will disappear into nothingness, but You will remain forever” (see Hebrews 1:10-11, TLB). Jesus Christ is Lord and God (e.g., see John 1:1-5, 14; John 20:28; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13). Even more, the living LORD God declares that His Son the Lord Jesus Christ will never change, and His years will never end (Hebrews 1:12; see also Hebrews 13:8).

What are angels?  Angels are spiritual messengers or servants who stand in the very Presence of the living God (Hebrews 1:7; see also Genesis 18:1-2; Judges 13:3; Luke 1:19, 26). The living LORD God speaks of the holy angels as His messengers who are swift as the wind and His servants of flaming fire (Hebrews 1:7; see also 2 Kings 2:11; 2 Kings 6:17; Psalm 104:4; Luke 1:11; Luke 2:13-15; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8). Sometimes God’s holy angels also appeared in human form (e.g., see Genesis 16:11; Genesis 18:1-5; Judges 6:11-14; Luke 1:11; John 20:12-13; Hebrews 13:2). The holy angels served Abraham, Moses, Elijah, Balaam, and Daniel. Moreover, the living LORD God used His holy angels to send our His moral laws and commandments at Mount Sinai and the Gospel at the end of the age (e.g., Deuteronomy 33:2; Psalm 68:17; Acts 7:53; Galatians 3:19; Revelation 14:6).

As mentioned earlier, angels are servants that are NOT to be worshipped (e.g., see Revelation 19:10; Revelation 22:8-9). Angels are sometimes called “sons of God” in the Old Testament (e.g., see Genesis 6:2, 4; Job 1:6; Job 2:1).  While the angels collectively may be termed “the sons of God,” no angel would be given this title individually as the Lord Jesus Christ. Only Jesus Christ has been given the Name and Title the Firstborn Son and Royal Heir of God (Hebrews 1:5-6; see also Luke 1:32-35; John 1:18; John 3:16; Romans 8:29; Colossians 1:15, 18). The Lord Jesus Christ is the Sustainer, Creator, and Heir of the universe (e.g., see Hebrews 1:2-3). In fact, the angels worshipped and served Jesus as at His birth, temptation with evil, and just for His sacrificial death (e.g., see Matthew 4:11; Matthew 26:53; Mark 1:13; Luke 2:13-15; Luke 22:43; Hebrews 1:7). The worship of any object or being – no matter how noble – other than the living LORD God is idolatry, a sin the Holy Scriptures strongly warn again (e.g., see Exodus 20:3-5; Deuteronomy 6:13; Matthew 4:10; 1 Thessalonians 1:9; 1 John 5:20-21).

As servants, the living God sends out His holy angels as spiritual messengers to help and care for those who are to receive God’s salvation (Hebrews 1:14; see also Psalm 46:7, 11; Psalm 103:21; Luke 1:11-13, 19, 26-28; Acts 5:19). The angels of the living God surround, guard, and protect those who love, honor, and obey the living God (e.g., see Psalm 34:7; Psalm 91:11; Daniel 6:22; Matthew 18:10). The angels of God are thousands and upon thousands (e.g., Daniel 7:10; Luke 2:13; Hebrews 12:22; Jude 1:14), and these angels of God surround the throne of God and His Son Jesus (e.g., see 1 Kings 22:19; Revelation 5:11). Sadly, some of these heavenly angels revolted against the living God and fell from heaven. For these falling angels, their allegiance is now with the evil one – liar, deceiver, and murderer.

Jesus Is Greater!

1 Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. 2 And now in these final days, He has spoken to us through His Son (Jesus Christ). God promised everything to the Son (Jesus Christ) as an inheritance, and through the Son (Jesus Christ) He created the universe (worlds, ages). 3 The Son (Jesus Christ) radiates God’s own glory (light) and expresses the very character (image, representation) of God, and He (Jesus Christ) sustains everything by the mighty power of His command. When He (Jesus Christ) had cleansed (purified) us from our sins, He sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. Hebrews 1:1-3 (NLT)

The book of Hebrews opens with an important announcement: “In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets …. now in these last days God has spoken to us through His Son” (see Hebrews 1:1-2, NCV). The theme of the New Testament book of Hebrews is the absolute supremacy and greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior!

Long ago the living LORD God of heaven and earth spoke and instructed His people through His servants the prophets (see Hebrews 1:1). One of greatest prophets God spoke through was His servant Moses (e.g., see Numbers 12:7; John 9:29; Hebrews 3:2, 5). The living God revealed His glory, goodness, and character to Moses (see Exodus 33:18-19; Exodus 34:5-8). Many biblical scholars believe Moses wrote the first five books of the Holy Scriptures – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).

Moses faithfully served and worshipped the living LORD God and instructed the people in God’s moral commandments (Deuteronomy 34:10-12; see also Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21; Hebrews 3:2, 5). Because of Moses’ faithfulness, the living LORD God knew and spoke to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend (Deuteronomy 34:10; see also Exodus 33:11; Numbers 12:8). Even more, Moses was a faithful leader and shepherd to God’s people, the ancient Israelites (e.g., see Ex. 32:30-35; Hebrews 11:24-27). Through his devotion, the all-powerful God performed on behalf of His servant Moses great miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh and all Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of all Israel (Deuteronomy 34:11-12; see also Deuteronomy 4:34).

Indeed, Moses has no equal in later biblical history as God’s humble, obedient, and faithful servant except for the Lord Jesus Christ (e.g., see Deuteronomy 18:15, 18). But it would be more than a thousand years before One greater than Moses would appear — the Lord Jesus Christ. In the Old Testament, there were many great and powerful prophets of the living LORD God such as Abel, Joshua, David, and Zechariah that faithful declared God’s message (e.g., see 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21). These faithful servants and prophets of God, again and again, declared God’s message – to turn from evil, wickedness, and idolatry and turn in faithfulness and obedience to God and His righteous ways (e.g., see 2 Kings 17:13; 2 Chronicles 36:15; Jeremiah 7:3, 13; Jeremiah 25:4; Jeremiah 26:5; Jeremiah 29:19; Jeremiah 35:15; Ezekiel 14:6; Ezekiel 18:30). These faithful prophets of God instructed the people to correct their evil and deceitful deeds such as  oppressing and exploiting foreigners, the fatherless, the poor, and the widow and shedding innocent blood and instead to act justly toward one another (e.g., see Deuteronomy 6:4-6, 14; Deuteronomy 24:14; Isaiah 1:16-17; Jeremiah 7:3-7; Jeremiah 18:11; Jeremiah 26:13; Jeremiah 22:3; Micah 6:6-8). Also, the prophets encouraged the people not to steal, murder, commit adultery, lie, nor follow other gods (e.g., see Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21; Jeremiah 7:9-11; Matthew 19:18-19).

Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the prophet’s message of repentance (turning from sin and turning to the living God in faithfulness, love, and obedience), and they continued in their wickedness, evil, and idolatry (worship of other gods) (e.g., see Jeremiah 7:25-26; Jeremiah 44:4-6). Instead of obedience to God and His commandments, the people killed the prophets of God – from Abel to Zechariah (e.g., see Matthew 23:29-32; Luke 11:48-51; Acts 7:51-53).

Finally, the living LORD God sent His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior, in the last days to reveal His glory, instruct the people, and give eternal life (Hebrews 1:2-3; see also John 3:16-17; John 17:3, 6, 8, 18, 21, 23, 25). The LORD God chose His Son Jesus Christ as a sacrifice long before the world began to bring salvation, and He has now revealed Him in these last days (e.g., see Hebrews 9:26-28; 1 Peter 1:20). Jesus Christ was the Great Prophet predicted by Moses, and He spoke God’s Word faithfully to the people (Deuteronomy 18:15, 18; e.g., see also John 1:44-45; John 6:14; John 12:49-50; John 17:8; Acts 3:22-23; Acts 7:37-38). By faith, Moses had the confident assurance and hope that the living LORD God would bring Jesus Christ as that Prophet (see Hebrews 11:1-2, 26-27).

The Lord Jesus Christ was more than the Great Prophet predicted in the Old Testament because He was also the following:

·         Son of the living God (see Matthew 16:16; Matthew 17:5; John 20:20-31);
·         Long awaited Messiah (see Matthew 1:1, 17; Mark 1:1);
·         King of the world (see Matthew 2:2; Hebrews 1:3, 8-9);
·         Great High Priest (see Hebrews 3:1; Hebrews 4:14; Hebrews 6:20); and
·         God incarnate (human flesh) (see Matthew 1:21-23; Hebrews 1:1-4).

The book of Hebrews provides practical instruction on the greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ (e.g., see Hebrews 7:1–10:18). The opening verses of Hebrews declare and announce the greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact, the word “better” and “greater” are used more than twenty-five times as the author shows the supremacy and greatness of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is “better than the angels” (see Hebrews 1:4) because He gives “a better hope” (see Hebrews 7:19) and “better promises” (see Hebrews 8:6) as the “author of eternal salvation” (see Hebrews 5:9). Through His sacrificial death, the Lord Jesus Christ is greater because He has cleansed us and cleared our record of all sin by His blood (Hebrews 1:3; see also Titus 2:14; Hebrews 7:27; Hebrews 10:10, 12; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 3:5) and “obtained eternal redemption” (see Hebrews 9:12). The Lord Jesus Christ shares with all believers in Him “the promise of eternal inheritance” (see Hebrews 9:15) and “better life after the resurrection” (11:16, 35). Moreover, the Lord Jesus Christ’s throne is forever (see Hebrews 1:8), and He is a Priest forever (see Hebrews 5:6; Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:17, 21). The Lord Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, and today, and forever” (see Hebrews 13:8).

The book of Hebrews reveals the Lord Jesus Christ as the climax and fulfillment of all the Holy Scriptures (see Luke 24:44-47). For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Son the Lord Jesus Christ with a resounding “Yes! And through Christ, our Amen” (e.g., see Romans 15:8; 2 Corinthians 1:20).  The book of Hebrews declares that the Lord Jesus Christ is GREATER than:

·         Prophets (see Hebrews 1:1-3);
·         Angels (see Hebrews 1:4-14; Hebrews 2:5);
·         Moses (see Hebrews 3:1-6);
·         Joshua (see Hebrews 4:6-11);
·         Aaronic high priests (see Hebrews 5:1-10; Hebrews 7:26-8:2);
·         Levitical priests (see Hebrews 6:20-7:25);
·         Tabernacle ministry (see Hebrews 8:3-6; Hebrews 9:1-28);
·         Old covenant (see Hebrews 8:7-13); and
·         Old Testament sacrifices (see Hebrews 10:1-14).

The author of Hebrews makes clear that Jesus Christ is Lord and God (Hebrews 1:2-4; see also Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-5, 10, 14, 18; John 20:28; Romans 1:4; Romans 9:5; Romans 10:9; Philippians 2:6, 11; Colossians 1:15-20; Colossians 2:9). The Lord Jesus Christ reflects the same and exact character, nature, Presence, imprint, Name, representation, and glory of His Father, the living LORD God (Yahweh) (Hebrew 1:3, 5-6; see also Luke 9:32; John 1:1-5, 14; John 14:9; John 17:11-12; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Philippians 2:6, 9; Colossians 2:9; 2 Peter 1:17). In other words, the Lord Jesus Christ reflects the Person, Presence, and Glory of the living LORD God (e.g., see John 1:1-2, 14; John 17:5, 24). The Name of Jesus Christ has the same power as His Father the LORD God to bring salvation to all who come to Him by faith and repentance (e.g., see Joel 2:32; Luke 24:47; John 14;6; Acts 2:21, 38; Acts 4:12; Acts 10:43; Romans 10:13; Hebrews 10:20). The eternal LORD God revealed Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ, who is the exact image, revelation, and illustration of His Father, the living LORD God (Hebrews 1:3; see also Matthew 3:16-17). The Lord Jesus Christ is the complete expression of the living God in a human body.

Moreover, the Lord Jesus Christ is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe; for by Him, the living LORD God “made the worlds” (Hebrews 1:2, 10; e.g., see also John 1:3). Jesus was God’s mediator in creating the world: “For through Him God created everything” (e.g., see 1 Corinthians 8:6; Colossians 1:16). The Lord Jesus Christ upholds all things by that same powerful Word (Hebrews 1:3; see also Colossians 1:17). The Lord Jesus Christ is the God of Creation and the God of Providence (Wisdom) who guides and regulates the universe (see Hebrews 1:3).

Even more, the living LORD God has given His Son Jesus Christ the world as an inheritance (Hebrews 1:2; see also Psalm 2:8; Matthew 11:27; Matthew 21:33-46; Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19; John 1:3). In other words, the LORD God who is the Father of Jesus Christ has given and entrusted everything to His Son (e.g., see Matthew 11:27; Matthew 28:18; John 3:35; John 13:3).  Jesus Christ has become the firstborn and Royal Heir of God (Hebrews 1:6; see also John 1:18; John 3:16; Romans 8:29; Colossians 1:15, 18). Through your faith in God’s Son Jesus, all faithful believers also become children and heirs of God and co-heirs with Jesus Christ and His glory (e.g., see John 1:12-13; Romans 8:16-17; Galatians 3:29; Galatians 4:7; Titus 3:7). The living God sends His angels to care God’s children who will inherit salvation (see Hebrews 1:14).

Finally, the living Jesus Christ is now seated “on the right hand of the Majesty on high,” the place of honor (Hebrews 1:3; see also Psalm 110:1-2; Mark 16:19; Luke 22:69; Acts 5:31; Hebrews 8:1; Hebrews 10:12; Hebrews 12:2). The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the LORD God indicates that He is actively ruling with His Father as Lord of all (see Hebrews 1:2, 13). One day the Jesus Christ as the Great I AM, who is now seated in the place of power at His Father’s right hand, will come on the clouds of heaven to reward all faithful believers (e.g., see Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13-14; Matthew 16:27; Matthew 24:30-31; Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62; Revelation 1:7). As God, Creator, Prophet, Priest, and King, the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior is GREATER than ALL!

Blessings Restored

Moses:  2 “If at that time you and your children return to the LORD your God, and if you obey with all your heart and all your soul all the commands I have given you today, 3 then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes. He will have mercy (compassion) on you and gather you back from all the nations where He has scattered you…. 6 The LORD your God will change (circumcise) your heart and the hearts of all your descendants, so that you will love Him with all your heart and soul and so you may live!... 9 The LORD your God will then make you successful (abundantly prosperous) in everything you do. He will give you many children and numerous livestock, and He will cause your fields to produce abundant harvests, for the LORD will again delight in being good to you as He was to your ancestors. 10 The LORD your God will delight in you if you obey His voice and keep the commands and decrees written in this Book of Instruction, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul….

15 Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity (good life) and disaster (death). 16 For I command you this day to love the LORD your God and to keep His commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in His ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the LORD your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy. 17 But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, 18 then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed (eternal death, depression, destruction). You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.

19 Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! 20 You can make this choice by loving the LORD your God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly (cleave, cling, hold on) to Him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the LORD, you will live long in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”  Deuteronomy 30:2-3, 6, 9-10, 15-20 (NLT)

In Deuteronomy 30, Moses ends his farewell address he began to Israel starting in Deuteronomy 1 on the borders of God’s Promised Land (see Deuteronomy 1:1-5). Moses once again strongly instructed the people to LOVE the living LORD God and OBEY the living God’s moral commandments (see Deuteronomy 30:2-3, 6, 8, 10-11, 16). In fact, Moses repeatedly taught Israel throughout Deuteronomy (also known as “Second Law”) to love and obey the living God and His moral commandments from your whole heart, mind, and soul (e.g., see Deuteronomy 4:29; Deuteronomy 6:4-6; Deuteronomy 10:12-13, 20; see also, Matthew 22:37; John 14:15; Revelation 12:17; Revelation 14:12). Moses knew that our wholehearted love and obedience to the living God and His righteous ways lead to God’s blessings, restoration, and good life (Deuteronomy 30:3, 6, 9, 15-16, 20; see also Deuteronomy 5:33; Deuteronomy 6:2, 18; Deuteronomy 12:28). God is life and blessedness (Deuteronomy 30:20; see also Deuteronomy 4:1; Deuteronomy 8:3; Job 12:10; John 5:26; Acts 17:25, 28).

The connection is obvious: if you turn from your sins and rebellion to wholehearted love and obedience to God and His moral commandments, you will find and enjoy life (Deuteronomy 30:15-16; see also; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). Even more, when you love and obey the living God and His righteous commands, not only do you receive God’s abundant blessings, but you also receive His Presence as the living God comes and lives with you (e.g., see Leviticus 26:1-3, 11-12; Deuteronomy 28:1-14; Jeremiah 7:23; Jeremiah 11:4; Jeremiah 24:7; John 14:15-17, 21, 23-24; 2 Corinthians 6:16). Throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, God’s abundant blessings and Presence (Holy Spirit) are all linked to love and obedience to the living God and His righteous ways (e.g., John 15:10; Galatians 6:7-10; James 1:22-25; 1 John 2:5; 1 John 5:2-3). In other words, there is a Spiritual union with the living God when you love and follow His good ways (e.g., see John 17:21).

The living LORD God wants to do good for you and your family and not evil (Deuteronomy 30:5, 9; see also Deuteronomy 6:3, 18, 24). Besides, everyone who seeks the living God and does what is right and good are children of LORD God, while those who seek wickedness, evil, and sin prove they are far away from God (e.g., see Hebrews 13:16; 1 John 2:29; 1 John 3:6-10; 3 John 1:11). However, Moses taught the people that if your heart turns away from serving the living God and His righteous ways and are drawn to worship other gods, your life will lead to death and destruction (Deuteronomy 30:17-18; e.g., see also Exodus 20:3-4; Leviticus 26:1-3, 14-39; Deuteronomy 28:15-29:28). Those who reject and disobey the living LORD God bring punishment and wrath upon themselves (e.g., see Deuteronomy 29:19-20).

Amazingly, Moses looked down through the human history and predicted Israel would turn away from wholeheartedly loving the LORD God (idolatry) and obeying His moral commandments (rebellion) (e.g., see Deuteronomy 4:25-28; Deuteronomy 28:45-46; Deuteronomy 29:18-29). Such verses as Deuteronomy 28:25, 32-33, 36, 38,41-42, and 53 predict historical facts now recorded in Jewish history, both sacred and secular. Deuteronomy 28:62 foretells how not only the Jewish people but all people receive God’s wrath and scattering because of their reckless indulgence of evil, idolatry, and rebellion against God and His moral commandments – His Voice (e.g., see Deuteronomy 29:18-19, 28; Ezekiel 3:20-21; Ezekiel 18:24-26 Galatians 6:8; Revelation 22:14-15). The commandments of God is the Voice of God, and He expects everyone to obey His Voice (commandments).

The living God brought the punishment and curses of Deuteronomy 28 and 29 as well as Leviticus 26 in 722-721 BC and 586 BC when He allowed the Assyrian and Babylonian armies to defeat, destroy, and scatter Israel (Jews) throughout the world because of their repeated idolatry, rebellion, and disobedience and the land finally enjoyed the Sabbath rest (Leviticus 26:33-35; Deuteronomy 28:49-52, 64-65; see also 2 Kings 17:5-23; 2 Kings 25:1-26). Moreover, the Roman emperor Hadrian and Titus oppressed and ravaged the Jewish people in the first century A.D. as predicted in Deuteronomy 28. Finally, the Jewish people suffered many of the curses and diseases during the Middle Ages as predicted in Deuteronomy 28. The living God was using His punishment and discipline of His people to lead to their restoration and repentance – turning from sin and turning God with love and obedience (e.g., see Hebrews 12:10-11).

Moses also rightly predicted Israel’s future salvation, restoration, and blessings when they wholeheartedly returned and sought the living God and obeyed His commands after their idolatry and rebellion (Deuteronomy 30:1-5; see also see Leviticus 26:40-45; Deuteronomy 4:29-30; Deuteronomy 11:26-28:  1 Kings 8:47-50; 2 Chronicles 15:4; Nehemiah 1:9; Isaiah 55:6-7; Joel 2:12-13). The living God abundantly blesses those who wholeheartedly seek and obey Him (e.g., see Deuteronomy 28:1-14; 1 Chronicles 28:9; Hebrews 11:6). If you seek the living God from your whole heart, you will find Him, find abundant life, and God’s goodness (Deuteronomy 30:9-10; see also 2 Chronicles 7:14; Jeremiah 29:13-14; Amos 5:4, 6, 14-15). Even more, the living LORD God is gracious, kind, loving, compassionate, and forever merciful to those who turn away from evil and sin and turn to Him in faithfulness and obedience (Deuteronomy 30:3; see also e.g., Deuteronomy 4:31; Exodus 34:6-7; Numbers 14:17-18; Psalm 145:8-9; Nahum 1:3; James 5:11).

Still more amazing, Moses looked down through the ages and predicted the coming of the Holy Spirit of God to change and circumcise the people’s hearts (Deuteronomy 30:6; see also Deuteronomy 10:16; Jeremiah 4:4). In reality, the heart is the very source of all your sins because God had to give Israel the will and power to love and obey Him. Moses predicted that when the people REPENTED and TURNED from their rebellion to the living God and His moral commandments, the living LORD God would perform a spiritual “operation” and circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants to love and obey Him with all your heart, all your mind, and all your soul (Deuteronomy 30:6; see also Deuteronomy 6:4-6). In other words, Moses predicted the coming of God’s Holy Spirit to give God’s people new Spiritual life – a new heart, soul, and mind! Just as physical circumcision identified one as belonging to the Abrahamic covenant, spiritual circumcision would be the seal of membership into God’s family – the new Israel (see Genesis 17:13-14; Romans 2:28-29; Ephesians 1:13). When you repent (turn from evil and turn to God), the living God by His Holy Spirit performs a spiritual operation that bring you a new heart, new soul, and a new life (e.g., see Deuteronomy 10:16; Jeremiah 24:6-7; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Jeremiah 32:39-40; Ezekiel 11:19; Ezekiel 36:26-29; Joel 2:12-13; John 3:3-8). In other words, God will come live inside you with the Helper – the Holy Spirit – to help you love and obey His righteous ways – inward spiritual renewal (see John 14:16-17, 26; John 15:26; John 16:7; Acts 2:38-40)!

Moses made clear that finding new and true life is NOT a difficult decision, too far off, placed in the heavens, nor beyond the sea (see Deuteronomy 30:11-14). Amazingly, the Apostle Paul of the New Testament agreed with Moses’ teaching from Deuteronomy 30 (e.g., see Romans 10:6-10). Both Moses and the Apostle Paul agree that no one must go up to heaven or across the sea to another country, because the living God freely gives everyone life by choosing Him! Incredibly, the Lord Jesus Christ taught the same message of Moses and the Apostle Paul: repent of your sins, love His Father the living LORD God with all your heart (faith), and obey God’s moral commandments (Deuteronomy 30:15-16; see also e.g., Genesis 15:6; Matthew 4:17; Matthew 6:33; Matthew 22:37; John 14:15). Repentance, love, and obedience to GOD BRINGS LIFE, restoration, and blessings (see Deuteronomy 30:15-16, 20). Through our love and obedience to the living God, we live, move, and have our being (see Acts 17:28). Life depends on your absolute allegiance to God!

Some people will argue and say, “I only worship and accept God but not Jesus!” The Holy Scriptures declare that the Lord Jesus Christ is God (e.g., see John 1:1-5, 14, 16, 18; John 20:28; Romans 9:5; Hebrews 1:1-3). In the Lord Jesus Christ is the fullness of God (e.g., see Colossians 1:19; Colossians 2:9-10). The Lord Jesus Christ is One with His Father, the living LORD God (e.g., Deuteronomy 6:4; John 10:30; John 14:9-10; John 17:11, 21-23). Moreover, the Lord Jesus Christ is the visible image of the invisible God, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the exact likeness of the unseen living LORD God, His Father (e.g., see 2 Corinthians 4:4; Philippians 2:6; Colossians 1:15-16; Hebrews 1:3). Finding restoration, blessings, and life also means fully accepting, believing, and worshipping the living LORD God’s only begotten Son, Jesus the Messiah (e.g., Mark 1:1; John 8:24; John 11:25; John 14:6; John 20:30-31). Just as the living LORD God has life, God’s Son also has and gives life to those who love and obey Him (e.g., see John 1:4; John 5:26; John 6:57; Acts 3:15; 1 John 5:11, 20; Revelation 1:18).

The Holy Scriptures teaches that you must believe and obey BOTH the living LORD God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to have life (e.g., see John 11:25; John 12:44-45; John 14:1, 6, 15; 1 John 3:24). Life comes when you love and accept the only true God and His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, who He sent to earth (e.g., see John 3:15-16, 36; John 6:40, 47; John 17:3, 8, 21, 23; 1 John 5:12-13, 20). The Lord Jesus Christ lives in His Father the living LORD God, and the living LORD God lives in His Son as One (e.g., see Deuteronomy 6:4; Mark 12:29; John 14:7, 9-11; John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 8:4). The living LORD God of heaven and earth graciously sent His only begotten Son Jesus to be the Savior of the world (e.g., see Matthew 1:21; Luke 2:10-11; John 1:29; John 3:16-17; 1 John 4:14; Romans 10:9). Everyone who believes and accepts Jesus as the Son of the living LORD God has the true God living in them, and they live in God (e.g., see 1 John 2:23; 1 John 4:15).

After Moses’ farewell address, he turned the people of Israel over to Joshua to lead God’s people into His Promised Land (see Deuteronomy 31:1-8; Deuteronomy 34:9). Then, Moses blessed the people (see Deuteronomy 33), and then the living God buried Moses’ body in an undisclosed location (see Deuteronomy 34:5-8).

Some biblical scholars see Deuteronomy 30 as a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ’s second coming at the end of the age. The Holy Scriptures predict the future restoration, blessings, and regathering of Israel as a nation (Deuteronomy 30:1-10; see also, e.g., Jeremiah 29:14; Jeremiah 32:37; Ezekiel 34:13; Ezekiel 36:24). Moreover, some biblical scholars see Deuteronomy 30 as the restoration Israel and their land of Palestine (see Deuteronomy 30:5, 9; Amos 9:11-15); a work of grace in the people’s hearts (see Deuteronomy 10:16; Deuteronomy 30:6; Jeremiah 31:31-34); and judgment of Israel’s enemies (see Deuteronomy 30:7). It is important to note that Israel has never taken the land under the unconditional Abrahamic Covenant, nor has Israel possessed the whole land (e.g., see Genesis 15:18).
